Bonnybridge: The Ordinary Town That Reports 300 UFOs a Year

Bonnybridge doesn't look like a place built for spectacle. This village used to be a center for ironworking, sitting right on the Forth and Clyde Canal. It's only about twenty-five minutes from Falkirk, featuring a main street and houses that climb up the hillside. Roughly 6,000 people call this place home. Yet, according to the most widely shared numbers, Bonnybridge reports about 300 UFO sightings every single year. This wave of sightings really took off in 1992. That's when a local businessman described seeing two bright, star-like objects near the town. He said they moved in opposite directions before suddenly speeding away. After his story, more people came forward with their own accounts. A local council member, Billy Buchanan, began keeping a record of these sightings, and he hasn't stopped in thirty years. By his count, there have been more than 5,000 reports! He's even officially brought the matter to the Falkirk Council, and it's been mentioned in the Scottish Parliament. These reports tend to pop up in an area that people now call the Falkirk Triangle. This includes Bonnybridge itself, along with Stirling, Fintry, and the Campsie Fells hills. Now, there's a very reasonable, logical explanation for these sightings, and it's important to consider it. The town is located right under the flight paths for incoming planes heading to two major international airports. Also, Grangemouth, which is one of Europe's biggest chemical processing sites, is just fifteen minutes away. Its tall flare stacks, which burn off excess gases, can light up low clouds in strange and unusual ways. And central Scotland often experiences what are called temperature inversions – a weather condition where warm air traps cooler air below it. This can bend light, making faraway objects seem to hover or suddenly move.

However, people who live here offer a counter-argument. They've spent their entire lives next to an airport flight path and a refinery. They argue that they're probably better than most at recognizing what an airplane or a refinery flare looks like. The sightings themselves usually aren't dramatic. People describe slow-moving lights over the hills, objects that hover for a bit then zip off quickly, or sometimes an unusual shape seen against the clouds. No one in Bonnybridge is claiming they've been taken by aliens. What makes their story remarkable is simply the sheer number of sightings. Visiting Bonnybridge is a surprisingly rewarding experience, partly because the town doesn't try to capitalize on its fame. You won't find a museum, a festival, or even a gift shop selling UFO souvenirs. To experience it, you simply drive up to the higher ground north of the town, or head out towards the Carron Valley reservoir. Find a spot to pull over, park your car, and look north into the sky. For the best viewing, plan your trip between October and March. In the Scottish summer, this far north, the nights never get truly dark. But a cold, clear night after a weather front has passed through offers some of the best sky-watching conditions you'll find in Britain. Just be sure to bring waterproof clothing, no matter when you go! And why not make a whole day of it? The Falkirk Wheel (a rotating boat lift), the impressive Kelpies sculptures, and parts of the Antonine Wall (an ancient Roman defensive barrier) are all within fifteen minutes. Stirling Castle, a historic landmark, is just half an hour away. It's rare to find a famous UFO hotspot that also offers such a great short trip from Glasgow.
