Göbekli Tepe and the Rewriting of Prehistory
GeisTrack Editorial · 6 July 2026 · 10 min read

Six thousand years before Stonehenge, hunter-gatherers who had never farmed a field raised massive carved stone pillars, then deliberately buried them. Göbekli Tepe forces historians to rethink everything they assumed about how civilization began.
For a long time in the 20th century, historians believed they had the story of human civilization figured out. They thought farming had to come first, leading to extra food, which then allowed people to build grand temples and structures. Göbekli Tepe upends that idea entirely.
Picture towering, T-shaped stone pillars, some reaching up to five meters (about 16 feet) tall. These incredible monuments were put in place around 9500 BC by people who hadn't even started farming or raising animals yet. Then, for reasons we still don't fully understand, these ancient builders intentionally filled in and buried these impressive enclosures.
Only a tiny fraction of this entire site has been uncovered so far. This means the full story of Göbekli Tepe is still waiting to be told, promising many more discoveries to come.
